Fauna

 

In the Torrecilla and Piñones lagoons area we find an approximate amount of about 38 species of fish, such as:

• shad ( Megalops atlanticus )

• snook ( Centropomus undecimalis )

• tilapia (Mozambique tilapia)

• mullet ( Mugil lisa )

• crappie ( Diapterus Plumeri).

 

We can also find:

  • "jueyes"

  • sea urchins

  • crabs

  • sea snails

  • other invertebrates.

 

Among the most common crabs are:

• fiddler crabs (Uca vocator)

• blue land crab (Cardiosoma guanhumi)

• the cocolías (Callinectes sp)

 

We can also find about 96 species of birds, such as:

• woodpecker ( Colaptes melanochloros )

• the greater booby ( Coccyzus vieilloti )

• white egret ( Egretta alba)

• Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)

• the common coot ( Moorhen )

• earwig ( auricularia orficula)

 

Because of the Regulation for governing the vulnerable and endangered in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, in the Piñones State Forest, we have the following protected species :

• The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), endangered .

• The leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) , endangered .
